KIIT School of Pharmacy, KIMS, KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, observed World No Tobacco Day on 31 May 2026 with enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members. The programme aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco addiction and promote a healthier, tobacco-free society.
The observance was aligned with the World Health Organization (WHO) theme for 2026, “Unmask the Appeal – Countering Tobacco and Nicotine Addiction,” which highlights the deceptive strategies employed by the tobacco and nicotine industry to attract and retain users, particularly young people.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Dr. BiswaranjanBehera, Principal, KIIT School of Pharmacy. In his address, he emphasized the vital role of pharmacists and healthcare professionals in tobacco cessation, patient counselling, and public health awareness. He encouraged students to become ambassadors of a tobacco-free lifestyle and actively contribute to community health initiatives.
A total of 213 students participated in various competitions organized to mark the occasion. These included:
- Debate Competition on the theme: “Can Pharmacists Become the Most Effective Frontline Professionals in Combating Tobacco Addiction?”
- Rangoli Competition on the theme: “Say No to Tobacco, Say Yes to Life”
- Poster Making Competition on the theme: “Impact of Tobacco Addiction on Society”
The competitions provided an excellent platform for students to showcase their creativity, awareness, and commitment to combating tobacco use. Through insightful presentations and artistic expressions, participants highlighted the health, social, and economic consequences of tobacco addiction.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Pritipadma Panda, Cultural Coordinator, with the active support of faculty members and student coordinators. The event concluded with a collective pledge by all participants to spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and work towards building a healthier, tobacco-free future.
