A field visit to the Central Pharmacy, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, was organized on 17thJune 2026 for the 2nd Year D. Pharm students (Admission Batch 2024) under the subject Community Pharmacy & Management. About 21 students participated in the visit under the guidance of Dr. Pritipadma Panda.
The visit commenced with an informative presentation by the Pharmacy Manager, who explained the layout design of the storage areas for drug and non-drug substances. Students gained a basic understanding of the process through which medicines and other healthcare products enter the central pharmacy store via the receiving bay. They also learned about barcode generation and inventory management, as well as the storage of pharmaceutical products under different temperature conditions in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
During the visit, students observed the storage techniques employed for surgical items, gloves, cotton, sutures, ligatures, and other medical supplies. They were introduced to hospital pharmacy management software used for inventory control, stock monitoring, and dispensing operations. The students also learned about the return policies for expired, damaged, and non-moving items to vendors and wholesalers.
The visit provided valuable practical exposure to pharmacy store management and supply chain operations. It enabled students to understand the real-world application of concepts taught in the classroom and strengthened their knowledge of hospital and community pharmacy management practices. Overall, the field visit was an enriching learning experience that helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional practice.
