On 10-07-2026 (Friday), the D. Pharm 2nd Year students of KIIT School of Pharmacy visited KAABEEL – 2.0 (SKILL CENTRE), KIMS as part of the Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy subject. The objective of the visit was to gain practical knowledge and hands-on exposure to various drug administration techniques.

During the visit, the students observed and studied the procedures for Intravenous (IV),Intramuscular (IM), and Subcutaneous (SC) injections, as well as the insertion and handling of cannulas, using advanced medical mannequins. The demonstration provided a safe and realistic learning environment, enabling students to understand the correct techniques, precautions, and clinical applications of these procedures.

The field visit enhanced the students’ practical skills, reinforced their theoretical knowledge, and improved their understanding of patient care and medication administration in a hospital setting.

Observations:

  • Proper hand hygiene and aseptic technique are essential to prevent infection.
  • Correct vein selection and insertion angle improve the success rate.
  • Gentle handling of the cannula minimizes tissue damage.
  • Secure fixation prevents accidental dislodgement.
  • Simulation on a mannequin helps build confidence and technical skills before patient care.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the practical session, I was able to:

  • Identify the equipment required for IV, IM, SC, & IV. cannulation.
  • Demonstrate the correct technique of inserting an for IV, IM, SC, & IV. cannulationon a mannequin.
  • Maintain aseptic precautions throughout the procedure.
  • Recognize common complications such as infiltration, infection, hematoma, and phlebitis.
  • Appreciate the importance of patient safety and proper documentation.

Conclusion: The practical session on intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous injection and cannula use for I.V. therapy using a mannequin was highly informative and beneficial. It enhanced my understanding of the procedure, improved my practical skills, and increased my confidence in performing I.V. cannulation safely. Practicing in a simulated environment is an effective way to prepare for real clinical situations while ensuring patient safety.
