KIIT School of Pharmacy, Bhubaneswar, organized an insightful lecture on May 5, 2025, on the topic “Concept and Best Practices of Pharmacovigilance and Materiovigilance Program of India.” The session was delivered by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Senior Principal Scientific Officer, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Government of India.

The event was graced by Brig. Prof.(Dr.) Ambika Prasad Mohanty, Director, KIMS and AVM Prof. (Dr.) Rama Chandra Das, Dean & Principal, KIMS.  The guest was introduced by Dr. Biswaranjan Behera, Principal, KIIT School of Pharmacy and was felicitated by the Director and Dean & Principal, KIMS. 

Dr. Kalaiselvan comprehensively outlined the fundamentals of drug safety, rational use of medicines and the latest rules and regulations under the Indian Pharmacopoeia. He placed strong emphasis on the significant national initiatives of the Pharmacovigilance program of India (PvPI) and the Materiovigilance Program of India (MvPI) which are pivotal in ensuring the safety of medicines and medical devices in the country. These initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing patient safety and promoting the rational use of therapeutic products nationwide.

Overall, the guest lecture was highly informative, offering valuable perspectives on the Indian Pharmacopeia Commission’s recent efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

Considering the critical role of Pharmacy professionals in the assessment and reporting of adverse events associated with Drug and medical device, Dr. Kalaiselvan provided deep insights into how their active participation can advance drug safety monitoring and improve healthcare outcomes. The lecture also shed light on career opportunities in Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) and regulatory affairs, followed by an engaging interactive session where students clarified doubts and explore future prospects. 

The program was concluded with a vote of thanks by the Principal, KIIT School of Pharmacy.
